Your Best Self

Can you imagine what would happen to a workplace culture in which every employee brought his or her “best self” to work every day? Productivity would skyrocket, human resource departments would be a thing of the past, meeting time would be enjoyable and productive, and the organization’s results and brand image would be off the charts!

I realize that our world in the 21st century is so enveloped with a “get-to-the-top” ideology and constrained with personal ambition that it is hard to imagine organizations being driven by anything else. In general, organizations want employees who are aggressive and driven, with a singular focus for results. Many of these organizations don’t care how you get there. Their motto is “just show me the money.”

What if we could take responsibility for our own personal space at work? Let’s say that, from this day forward, we purposed in our hearts to bring our “best selves” to work every single day. Doesn’t revival start in the hearts of individuals?

Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1 Thess. 5:16-18)

Let’s pretend for a minute that every aspect of our workplace existence was wrapped up with rejoicing, praying, and giving of thanks. Do you think that this mindset could have an impact and make a difference? For now, I am not talking about your boss or your co-workers. I am talking about the change that only you can make. I can hear all the naysayers and “yeah butters” out there right now… “Yeah, but you don’t understand my boss. I work in a terrible department. I am suffering Christian persecution. I sit next to a bully.” Let me reel you back in for a moment. I am only talking about your personal responsibilities at work.

Bringing your “best self” to work is a decision that you must wrestle with before each workday. It should become part of your overall spiritual duty to die daily to the old man within. Anything less than falling prostrate before God and pleading for His help, direction, and guidance will be met with utter failure. Trying to take this on in the flesh will also be met with cynicism and condemnation from co-workers. Strides will be made when it is evident to our fellow employees that the Spirit of God is leading the way. Let’s consider a few ordinary and common-sense things we can do for the glory of the Lord while at work.

Leave personal issues at home.

This is one of the most difficult things to bring under control and do. When we think of the ongoing pressures of family life and the numerous challenges that we contend with each day, it seems easier said than done. Even those who have mastered the responsibility of stewarding the family unit will admit that it is hard work. There are many things that can and do go wrong. There are endless course corrections. We encounter onslaughts of surprises and heartaches that many times bring us to our knees. Yes, we should come to our Heavenly Father every day with solemn and expectant prayer. We need to seek His face daily. 

Remain friendly, upbeat, and positive.

If you want to be a true Christian leader, you must embrace the positive side of life. Great leaders exude hope, joy, and confidence. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 18:24, “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” We need to show the vibrancy and light of our Savior. We should be so full of the Spirit of God that it is contagious. Our co-workers should see a contagion that can’t be attributed to anything in our natural sin nature but only to Christ. In other words, we should have a countenance and glow that can only come from above. 

Minimize negativity.

I have been around many believers who have this figured out. It simply amazes me. They have a way of turning even the worst situations into the most elegant spiritual food for the Lord. There is an upside and positive aspect in everything they encounter. They are the types of Christians who are genuine in their quests to avoid negativity. For those of us who suffer with this sin, we should lean on the everlasting arms of Jesus for our renewal and rebirth in this area.

Exude a joy and a Christian confidence (not self-confidence) about life.

Most mature Christians with discernment can distinguish between those who suffer with the disease (sin) of self-confidence and those who rely on the Lord. Those who carry themselves with a Christian confidence are quick to deflect praise and show a deference to other people. They give God the glory for every aspect of their lives with sincere humility. The Bible teaches us how we are to esteem others before ourselves.

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. (Phil. 2:3)

Are you willing to bring your best self to work every day so that others can see Christ in you?

Christian leaders who are happy, spiritually healthy, and filled with the joy of the Lord will do more to impact others than those who are focused on themselves and everything that is wrong with the world. The best way to begin is by getting your eyes off of yourself and putting them on the needs of other people.
