Christ's America

While the media works overtime to sensationalize the current election cycle for the Presidency of the United States of America, Christians would do well to sit back and reflect on Christ’s America. That America is a country that was conceived and designed by a Creator God. It is a country that is currently under construction by the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. He is the Alpha and Omega and the one supreme ruler over all the land. It is an America where the hand of God is ever present in shaping who we are to become as a nation. We are so fortunate to have a God that is active in the development of His Kingdom! And, yes, the decisions that we make, the laws that we enact, our desires and motivations as a people for spiritual matters, all play a role in defining our nation moving forward. However, when I hear of the despondency coming from our Christian citizenry relating to the options this country has for its choice of future leaders, I must ask the question, “Are we forgetting the power of a sovereign God?” In this chapter we want to explore what God says about civil government and the associated responsibilities, along with His involvement and control. This article is a companion to one that was written earlier titled, America’s Tipping Point

In the book of Romans, God makes it clear what His expectations are for honoring authority and obeying the government. He also makes it clear that He is in control of our government and the appointed leaders.

Romans 13:1-4 – “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

For he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.”

We have a tremendous responsibility to defend and obey our government as long as the government does not ask us to violate and go against God’s Word. The government was established to protect our freedoms and religious liberties here in the United States of America. Our government has a responsibility to take up arms (the sword) against those that seek to hurt and destroy those freedoms. There is also an inherent understanding that our political leaders will take up causes that are good for our country. They are appointed by God as ministers to us for our good. The verses above also point out that our government will “execute wrath on him that doeth evil.” The bottom line is that God has appointed our nation’s leaders and they are held to a very high standard for protecting and doing well for its citizens. When those standards are violated, we act in accordance with the laws of civil government for our voices to be heard. At other times, we conscientiously and peacefully object and demonstrate to get those laws and leaders overturned. When there are unjust laws and unjust leaders, we participate in their removal within the confines of the law.

As Christians we must be mindful that God is our ultimate authority, not the government. There are many in this country that would have you think that it is government that should rule and dominate every aspect of our lives. That supposition is in direct conflict with God’s Word (see scripture below). We always first bow before our God and obey His Bible principles, ordinances, and directives!

Matthew 22:21 – “They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”

The Bible goes on in 1 Peter to discuss our responsibilities to obey the various levels of government, whether it be at the Federal or State levels.

1 Peter 2:13-14 – “Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.”

What about taxation? Why should we allow our government to force us to pay taxes? This too, is a scriptural mandate.

Romans 13:6-7 For this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

Render therefore to all their dues; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.”

Therefore, we can see that paying taxes, while giving custom, fear, and honor to our government is a Bible-based responsibility.

That brings me back to the main point of this article. This is Christ’s America! He is in control. He appoints those who are in positions of authority. He allows our government to function in its existing capacity as a Democratic-Republic. He allows all of the various forms of taxation and regulation. It is He who gives His hand of protection or removes His hand of grace from our country for His ultimate glory! While the above facts do not in any way explain away our responsibility to rule; have dominion over the land; or be activist in trying to change the laws of the land; it should give us pause to reflect on the sovereign nature of our God and give us hope for the future. This is Christ’s America!

Let us end with a clear understanding of who is governing our great country!

Psalm 22:27-28 – “All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.

For the kingdom is the Lord’s: and he is the governor among the nations.”
