America's Tipping Point

March 11, 2016

At no other time since the founding of the United States of America have we had the level of opportunity we do now to change the course of history. This particular period in the development of our great country will set the stage of success for future generations. We are clearly at the precipice of something unusual and extraordinary. Yes, America’s tipping point is here and now. Simply put, our nation is in the throes of trying to work out and determine what we want to stand for; what values and principles will be our guiding light and anchor; and what legacy we hope to leave for our children. The contrast of opinions on how best to move forward and achieve those results are varied and stark. Some argue that the fight is over political ideology, lifestyle choices, morality, ethics, or just common human decency. Others say that the battle is about individual preferences and the ability to do one’s own thing. However, what this really boils down to is a fight for the spiritual center of our country. We are fighting for the souls of men and women. Everything else is merely an outcome (cause and effect) of our nation’s lukewarm spiritual nature and lack of connectivity to our Savior Jesus Christ. The decisions that we make this year will have lasting consequences for decades and centuries to come. Positive spiritual change will only occur when Christian men and women decide to involve themselves in the process of America’s renewal and spiritual rebirth. That rebirth will only take place when fundamental Christianity and absolute truth are the driving forces; the solid rock; and the foundation of our culture. What I am suggesting is that we employ a traditional and “originalist” spiritual strategy in America, that will help preserve what this country has stood for down through the years and the freedoms that we have enjoyed. Outside of that, it will be a long and slippery slope to spiritual apathy, which ultimately will destroy our nation. If you think that I am being alarmist and melodramatic in my stated premise, please read on.

The words of Hosea in the Old Testament have never resonated more clearly or articulated the true state of a nation than they do the United States of America in the twenty-first century. The warning for our day should not go unnoticed or unheeded.

Hosea 4:1-3 – “Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land,

By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.”

Hosea 4:6 – “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”

Do you see the similarities compared to what is going on in today’s world? Not much of a difference is there? However, I want to focus our attention on the last portion of this verse (Hosea 4:6). A portion of scripture that should give both Christian and non-Christians a pause for concern. The foundation that we are laying as a nation will clearly impact our children and grandchildren. Our offspring’s spiritual destiny lie in the balance of our current decision making. The Bible is clear: if we get so far off course from our spiritual center (God’s Word and absolute truth), there will be dire consequences for future generations. God is telling us that if we forgot His law, leading to an overall lack of knowledge, spiritual depth, and true understanding, the end result will be apostasy and heretical living. When that occurs, God will remove His hand of grace from the United States of America. The result of getting further off course is untold devastation and heartache. Remember, God will never leave or forsake us, it is we who have left an Almighty God by our actions of disobedience. America, what are we going to do? Will we continue with our selfish motivations, or will we change course and have a sincere desire to make our country spiritually relevant again, as a thriving Christian bedrock for our children and the future state of a nation? Christian, what are you going to do to make a real difference in our country? What choices will you make?

I believe that there are three primary courses of action (strategy) that we can choose from.

  1. America can hold fast to a Christian leadership worldview and make God’s Word the very center and existence of who we are as human-beings. We can cling to the loving faith of Jesus Christ and be disciplined in our everyday living and walk with Him. We can go back to the traditional and “originalist” thinking of the godly men and women who had a hand in the creation of our great nation. This determination would be a God-honoring strategy to be sure.

  2. Or, we can cozy-up to the standards of this present world, entirely forgetting that a Creator-God designed and spoke this universe into existence. A strategy that employs anti-God tactics and tries to confine Christianity to the four walls of a church building. A strategy that would surely please the prince of this earth, Satan.

  3. A third approach, and one that is so clearly evident in today’s culture is to try and do both at the same time. Live in the world, consciously enjoying all of its sinful pleasures, and then show up to a form of Sunday morning worship that nibbles around the edges. That way, church members don’t have to be too committed to living a disciplined Christian lifestyle. They can have one foot in worldly living and one foot in Christianity (so called), because it is all about them and their comfort! This too, is a strategy that would surely please the prince of this earth, Satan. Or should I say, does please the prince of this earth. The moral fiber and spiritual center of our country is being destroyed by this third choice. The fallout and results of this path (strategy) are obvious to anyone who is willing to be honest. Let’s consider a few of the prevalent societal issues that are decimating the core of the United States of America. Just think about the rampant nature of divorce, adultery, pornography, murder, theft, idolatry, and the extreme lawless that is pervasive in our country. For those who will not admit the obvious, that blind and selfish choice is clearly one of convenience, comfort, and personal satisfaction. Yes, this is the path that our country is currently following as a nation. Fortunately, we have great hope and confidence in an active and living God who we trust and believe will intervene and change the course of human history. Remember, God uses man to accomplish His perfect will.

For true believers, the strategic choice to reconcile our country back to its spiritual center is obvious to us. We must get on our knees before the Lord and cry out to Him with fervor, immediacy, and sincerity – a cry that is so heart-felt that it shakes us to our core – a cry so loud and clear that the world stands up and takes notice. We must stand tall and let our light so shine before men. The following Bible verses challenge us to do exactly that!

Psalm 107:28-31 – “Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!”

Philippians 2:15 – “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;”

And yes, we need to be activist in our pursuit of these God honoring ends of bringing our country back to Christ. We need to follow the example of Jesus Christ Himself when He walked the face of this earth. Jesus came to this earth and upended and disrupted the conventional thinking of the day. Some would say that not only was He an activist in preaching salvation through Christ and Christ alone, but was radical in His anti-establishment teaching and theology. He had a message and worldview that no one wanted to hear. He stood tall in the face of adversity.

Likewise, if God is going to use Christians as instruments to change the spiritual course of our country, we must be willing to take a stand. We too, must be activist and anti-establishment in our approach to change. Our desire should be to bust up the establishment of this world’s thinking and ideology so that brings us back to a God-centered nation. The Founding Fathers understood that the backbone of our country rested in the faith that we have in a living God. They understood that our spiritual obedience would lead the Hand of Providence to make and bless a great nation. They also understood that it would take grit, determination, and an uncompromising passion to fight for the things that made this country great in the first place. We are one nation under God. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are basic human rights that we must stand up and fight for. Will you stand in the gap and fight? Will you pull up your bootstraps and man-up?

Ezekiel 22:30 – “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me in the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.”

1 Corinthians 16:13 – “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.”

Praise the Lord that the future of the United States of America looks bright! However, that shining light and beacon of hope will only last if we put our trust, faith, and hope in a Risen Savior. America’s tipping point is happening as we speak and unfolding before our very eyes. We are at a crossroads like no other time in our nations’ history. Let us unite as American citizens speaking with one voice to reestablish the spiritual center of our nation. Praise God!
